The short novel, subtitled 'Sotie' in homage to the medieval satirical genre, follows the investigations of a terminally ill Vice Commissioner in Sicily during the years of lead, interweaving reflections on death, power and justice with references to Dürer's engraving 'The Knight, Death and the Devil'. Copy with handwritten note of ownership dated 13 January 1988 — just one month after publication — which testifies to the immediate circulation of the work among readers of the period. Good condition with minimal signs of use.
