Michel Seuphor
Écritures dessins d'Alcopley
Rare original edition of 'Écritures', a collaboration between Belgian art critic and poet Michel Seuphor and German-American artist Alcopley (Alfred L. Copley), published in 1954 by the prestigious Parisian publishing house Les Nourritures Terrestres in a limited edition of 600 copies. Trilingual volume (French, English, German) with translations by Louisa Varèse and Paul Ohlmeyer, printed by Drukkerij Meijer of Amsterdam. The work features Alcopley's abstract calligraphic drawings accompanied by Seuphor's poetic-critical text, a key figure in the European abstract movement and founder of 'Cercle et Carré'. This copy bears an autograph dedication by Seuphor on the title page ('Homage to "20th Century" / Seuphor'), an element that significantly increases its collectible value. Publisher's wrappers with original drawings by Alcopley on the cover. Good condition with light signs of use consistent with age. Important testimony to postwar visual poetry and concrete art, sought after by collectors specializing in European avant-gardes and the history of abstractionism.
